Sophia Ray

Biography

Sophia Ray

Sophia Ray began her creative life as a graphic designer, where she honed a strong visual sensibility that naturally evolved into moving image. Her university film landed her a spot in Creative Review’s graduate issue, and from there, she hustled her way into the film industry through a mix of live-action and animation - directing music videos for artists like Lily Allen and 5SOS, and picking up a VMA early on for good measure.

Sophia quickly found her groove in music videos and branded content, collaborating with the likes of Olly Alexander (Years & Years), Raye, Sigrid, and Ellie Goulding, as well as leading campaigns for brands including Squarespace, Nike, E45, Google, No.7 and the BBC.

Her work has picked up recognition on both sides of the Atlantic — with wins at the British Arrows, Clios, Creative Circle, 1.4, the LGBTQ+ Awards and D&AD. Her campaign for Make My Money Matter, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, earned her a Gold Arrow, one of four British Arrows she now has to her name.

Sophia’s work blends dreamy, whimsical visuals with something stranger simmering just beneath the surface. That darker streak came to the forefront in her psychological horror short Triptych, which enjoyed a successful festival run - winning Best Fantasy and Sci-Fi at the BAFTA-qualifying Bolton Film Festival, the H.P. Lovecraft Award at Vortex Flickers (Rhode Island), and nominated for Best UK Short at Raindance. It was also nominated for Best Editing at Academy Award-qualifying HollyShorts, as well as being selected at 26 Film Festivals worldwide.
